From Mining to Melodies: A Brotherhood of Song

Welcome to Snowdown Colliery Male Voice Choir. Our values of camaraderie, passion, and excellence drive us to create beautiful music and spread joy through our performances.

Nearly 100 Years celebrating our rich mining heritage and the joys of male voices singing in harmony

Snowdown Colliery Welfare Male Voice Choir was formed in 1929 by John Yorath, a Welshman, who was the choir-master of St. Peter’s Church Aylesham, and the choir has now been based in the village for over 90 years.

Meet our Music Director

I’ve always had a great passion for Male Voice Choirs

My father founded Thanet MVC in 1977, and I became a member at the tender age of 17.  I progressed to accompanist and within a short time became Musical Director.  I stayed in that position for 14 years; we grew from 12 members to around 60 in that time.  I have a strong Welsh connection my Grandad was a Miner in North Wales and my father of Welsh tongue was a professional tenor in his early years, he was also a member, soloist and Chairman of the Canoldir MVC

I have conducted choirs in Italy, France and Germany en masse.  I feel a strong connection with Snowdown Colliery Welfare Male Voice Choir and enjoy maintaining their strong historic mining values through song, this is a Choir that deserves a kick start, this is what I am here to do!
